What You Will Learn
You will learn how to make an object appear to be moving away from the camera even though it is animated on a flat surface. In this exercise, the flying saucer is giant compared to the planet. But when it flies toward the planet it shrinks down and creates the illusion that the planet is quite big when the flying saucer get close to it.
Why Is This Important?
Having the experience of producing a 3rd Dimension on a 2D surface is a useful skill. Using multiple sizes of the same character, along with proper timing and spacing, gives an animator the ability to bring another dimension to a table top. Yet another way to create the illusion of depth with cut-paper on a flat surface.
